DAY 109 Mangalore

DAY 109 Wednesday, May 3.

Mangalore

Reading all that Mangalore has to say about itself—one of the fastest developing cities in India, a transportation, commercial, etc., etc., hub. Strategic petroleum reserves. And boasting “tradition of traditions” to boot. Online descriptions say the city’s highlight is a duty-free store that accepts US dollars. So we went shopping.

The cruise terminal is very slick and modern. The shuttle bus was comfortable and air conditioned, but was obviously well worn. The city’s infrastructure, though, is more like that of Mumbai, except Mangalore has more tuk-tuks. We got a charge out of some of the names on the trucks and tuk-tuks: Infant Jesus Water Company; Hail Mary, St. Sebastian, and Ganesh buses.

Mary found some wonderful clothes, including two saris. Now we have to learn how to dress her in them. I took a video of them being fitted to her, but I think it’s going to take more than just that video to get the hang of it.
