Cochin (Kochi)
We hired a tuk-tuk to take us around the city, to see the sights. Top of my list was the “Chinese” fishing nets, which I saw pictures of on line and drew for practice. But the sight that really spoke to me was a shrine, called Gosreepuram by one of the people there, that turns out to be one of the most important in the area. Unlike other Hindu temples, it is not covered with hundreds of colorful statues, but has a restrained, classic look about it. It is a huge, sprawling complex with one unusual architectural feature: the whole complex is covered with copper roofs. One small temple in particular caught my eye, a square temple set in the middle of a square pond where the lotus were blooming. In it setting it reminded me of the ancient Hindu temples of Angkor.
